Almonds Are Good For You

Almonds may not be considered a typical diet food because they have a reputation of being high in fat and calories. These nuts do contain fat, but most of it is the heart-healthy unsaturated kind, which can help you feel full. MayoClinic.com adds that a diet that includes nuts such as almonds may also reduce your risk of heart disease by helping you lower your LDL, or dangerous, blood cholesterol levels. Adding almonds to your weight loss plan will provide a healthy amount of fiber to keep you full and enable you to reduce your overall calorie intake. -www.livestrong.com

20 Benefits Of Walking For Exercise

Walking is especially good if you're someone who's reluctant to exercise because it doesn't feel like exercise.  If you walk at a brisk pace you can get a really good workout. It's so easy to do for most people and is as simple as putting on some comfortable clothes and shoes and walking out of the door.

Demand More Of Yourself

Demand more of yourself by making exercise a vital and consistent part of your life. Make yourself strong, your persistence will be rewarded.

For my UK readers: Have you ever thought of becoming a fitness instructor? A great way to motivate yourself to exercise consistently is to learn how to teach others to do the same. Fit Training is one of the UKs leading fitness training providers, they have courses at all levels from beginner to advanced. Watch one of their videos HERE on YouTube to learn more.

Exercise Motivation Tip

I'm always searching for ways to motivate myself to exercise and this picture shows my latest "invention". It's a picture of a digital photo frame taped to my elliptical. It's one of those photo frames that plays videos as well as display pictures plus it has a USB port so you can load any video onto it.

Using a photo frame like this has many more advantages than just placing your exercise machine in front of the TV because you can choose from the multitude of videos available on YouTube and the internet. On my screen is a screenshot of The Biggest Loser UK...I like pretending the trainers are yelling at me to work harder while doing my workout.

The photo frame I'm using is available HERE.

The Scales Are Not Always The Best Way To Measure Fat Loss

If you were to place 5lbs of fat and 5lbs of muscle side by side the fat would look about twice the size of the muscle because muscle tissue is more tightly packed than fat tissue. A 150lb person with toned muscle and a low percentage of body fat will appear slimmer than a 150lb person with low muscle development and a high percentage of body fat. As we get fitter we gain more muscle so the scales may not always accurately show our weight loss. So use other methods (as well as the scales) like a tape measure or the way your clothes fit to determine the amount of fat you've shed from your body.

Use Measuring Spoons To Aid Portion Control

I recently found out, to my horror, that a tablespoon of olive oil contains 120 calories; and I never used a tablespoon to measure it, I always poured straight from the bottle. Although olive oil is a healthy fat, use it in moderation.

The Benefits of Doing Regular Aerobic Exercise:
  1. Strengthening the muscles involved in respiration, to facilitate the flow of air in and out of the lungs
  2. Strengthening and enlarging the heart muscle, to improve its pumping efficiency and reduce the resting heart rate, known as aerobic conditioning
  3. Strengthening muscles throughout the body
  4. Improving circulation efficiency and reducing blood pressure
  5. Increasing the total number of red blood cells in the body, facilitating transport of oxygen
  6. Improved mental health, including reducing stress and lowering the incidence of depression
  7. Reducing  the risk for diabetes.
  8. Burns body fat, while building leaner muscle.

I find it really motivating to occasionally remind myself of all the good exercise does to my body and mind. It can be so easy to think of exercise as only a means of burning calories and losing weight, but it can do so much more.

Start Running or Jogging

I started jogging some years ago and these were some of the reasons why I began.
  1. To burn fat and lose weight
  2. To inspire others to get fit and healthy
  3. To eliminate "I can't" from your dictionary
  4. To build physical and mental toughness
  5. To discover your own personal best
  6. To promote overall health and fitness
  7. To boost confidence and self-esteem
  8. To decrease stress and to feel good

The exercise motivation tip below is from  Spark People.com and I can vouch for the fact that just getting your running shoes on even if you don't feel like doing any exercise, is a great way to get yourself motivated to get out of the door or to start some sort of exercise.

For my British readers if your're looking for some great running shoes try these from Northern Runner.com

Calories Are Like Money In The Bank

Seeing calories like money in the bank is a fun way to get a different perspective on your calorie intake and expenditure. If calories were money in the bank we'd be much more careful how we spent them each day. Eat healthy nutritious food but be aware of the calories.
